Copenhagen Health Innovation

I collaborated with a group on this case project in partnership with Bispebjerg Hospital and Copenhagen Health Innovation. Our collective aim was to enhance conditions at Bispebjerg Hospital's emergency reception, with a special focus on boosting staff visibility and cultivating a sense of community, collaboration, and calm.

The emergency reception is an intricate nexus of various systems and personnel, all intended to operate in harmony. Often, patients wait for hours due to communication challenges among the staff. Much of the information relay is verbal or telephonic. Furthermore, Bispebjerg Hospital's layout, divided among several buildings, complicates comprehensive oversight across all departments.

Our insights deepened following an interview with Chief Physician Mads Bruusgaard-Mouritsen. We discerned that communication bottlenecks weren't mere operational hitches but symptoms of broader systemic issues. A consistent overview of room availability, capacity shifts, and fragmented inter-departmental communication were the primary culprits.

We deduced that the root of the problem wasn't merely the wait times. It lay in internal and external communication, coupled with cross-departmental collaboration. Consequently, we posed the question: How can we devise a tool for staff that emphasizes unity and clarity? Our research culminated in a digital communication platform proposal primarily tailored for staff. The design's visual identity draws from the hospital's "Healing Gardens," thus imbuing the tranquility and tangibility of nature.

In this project, my primary responsibilities centered around UX and UI design. I developed wireframes, utilized color theory to create an engaging and intuitive interface, and crafted motion graphics to enhance user experience. The platform's core functions aim to establish clarity and foster collaboration. We introduced tools designed to ease intricate negotiations and provide a unified perspective of the hospital. Recognizing the immense stress endured by emergency department staff, we integrated a private, introspective check-out journal. Additionally, a digital bulletin board was implemented to bolster unity by allowing the sharing of ideas and activities.

Throughout our work, we extensively employed techniques such as problem framing, stakeholder mapping, and flow mapping. The problem framing, especially, deepened our comprehension, letting us zero in on the issue's nuances. Witnessing the frenzied pace of the emergency reception firsthand was both an inspiration and a driving force behind our efforts. We remain hopeful that our contributions, however small, will make a tangible impact.
